Over 5000 Christopher Nolan fans, subscribed to a Subreddit dedicated to the filmmaker, voted on his best films. The top vote-getter? Definitely not the film that critics would have chosen.
2014’s “Interstellar” topped the poll. That sci-fi epic polarized critics when it was released almost ten years ago, but it’s the clear winner among movie audiences.
One look at the IMDB Top 250 and you notice “Interstellar” has an incredible 8.6 rating. That’s good enough to be the 25th greatest film of all-time on that poll.
However, critics were not persuaded by the movie upon its release, it currently stands at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and 74 on Metacritic. Maybe some of these critics have reconsidered their opinion on the film in recent years.
Personally, I was, mostly, impressed by the film when I first saw it — it’s flawed, but incredibly ambitious and has these absolutely fascinating sequences spread outin its near 3-hour runtime.
In the Nolan fan poll, “Inception” came in at #2, “The Dark Knight” was #3, his underrated “The Prestige” was #4 and rounding out the top 5 was “Memento.”
Nolan’s most critically-acclaimed movie, 2017’s “Dunkirk,” only garnered the #7 spot. The much-maligned “Tenet” actually finished ahead of it. That’s further proof of the critic and audience divide when it comes to Nolan’s films.
It’s not just the Academy, but also critics who have not been on-board the Nolan train during his historic career as a filmmaker. I wonder if that’ll change with the upcoming “Oppenheimer,” which, much like “Dunkirk,” is not sci-fi but rather a full-blown historical biopic.
Now, it’s your turn to chime in on what you believe to be Nolan’s best film.
