I was wondering why it took so long for Thierry Fremaux to announce the jury for the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Now we kind of have our answer. He couldn’t find any big names. It’s as simple as that.
Of the jurors announced this morning, the biggest names are Brie Larson, Paul Dano and Julia Ducournau. Rounding out the list are director Maryam Touzani, French actor Denis Ménochet, director Rungano Nyoni, Afghan author Atiq Rahimi and director Damián Szifrón.
Two-time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund will preside over the jurors — he won the big prize twice, last year for “Triangle of Sadness” and in 2017 for “The Square.”
I could see a few of the Un Certain Regard jurors fitting in better in the official competition jury instead — John C. Reilly, Alice Winocour and Paula Beer could have all been there.
The issue in the slim pickings for Cannes juries resides in the fact that too many people are working on their own productions in the summer. It used to not be that way, but the pandemic shook up a lot of things up including production schedules.
The 2022 Cannes jury was presided over by “Titane” actor Vincent Lindon, with Rebecca Hall, Asghar Farhadi, Jeff Nichols, Noomi Rapace, Joachim Trier, Jasmine Trinca, Deepika Padukone, and Ladj Ly rounding out the complete jury.
This year’s festival will premiere new films from Wes Anderson, Todd Haynes, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Glazer, Aki Kaurismaki, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Alice Rohrwacher, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and more.
