Part of me really wanted Martin Scorsese’s "Killers of the Flower Moon" to compete for the Palme d’Or. He hasn’t done that since 1986. Alas, the Cannes schedule is out today and it seems as though the film will be screening out of competition, its world premiere on May 20.
Looks like fest head Thierry Frémaux couldn't convince Scorsese to join the Palme d'Or competition. Is a last-minute change still possible? You never know, but Apple would have surely made up their mind by now. The fest starts in six days.
Despite my wishful thinking, out of competition seems to be the right place for the film. It would have been too much of a distraction for the other competing films. Fremaux has also been hyping up the movie to no ends and that’s usually a no-no. He isn’t really allowed to give his opinion on the Palme d’Or films.
Also, one look at the schedule and many people were displeased to read this morning that ‘Killers’ is only screening once for press. So, you best be lined up early if you want to catch this 206 minute movie, by far the most anticipated one of this 76th Cannes Film Festival.
