A small detail was hidden in this morning’s press release of the Cannes jury. It turns out Julia Ducournau’s next project will be her own TV series with A24 and she’s also working on her next movie. No other details were revealed.
The release of Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or winning “Titane” resulted in polarized reactions back in 2021. Even the Telluride Film Festival rejected the film. At Cannes, I described it as a “midnight movie.”
There’s also no reason to fault the Spike Lee jury for giving it the top prize that year. It was a ballsy move and Ducournau’s film did feel like something we had never seen before. As Lee stated: “I’ve never seen a film in my life where a Cadillac impregnated a woman.”
It’s well worth checking out Ducournau’s first feature, “Raw.” I interviewed her for that one back in 2017, little did she know that she’d become a Palme d’Or winner a few years later. You could see the makings of genuine talent when watching that film.
