The below is a New York Times posting from today that has them seeking “a multifaceted critic” to replace A.O. Scott.
They’re looking for a person who can “connect themes and issues on screen to what’s happening in society.” So, basically, they want a film critic that values culture over art? Sounds like the Times.
Oh, and you absolutely have to be an “online first” kinda person if you are even tempted to apply.
Maybe, the most prestigious film critic job in the country is writing for the New York Times, or at least it was.
Scott’s decision to shift into book reviewing was announced more than a month ago. That basically left us with just Manhola Dargis, who has been the de facto lead critic until Scott’s replacement is found.
So, who replaces Scott? Times contributors Wesley Morris or Glenn Kenny? Dargis could just take over as chief film critic, but NYT would still need a second fiddle.
Some of the noteworthy film critics the NYT have employed over the last 5 decades include Vincent Canby, Bosley Crowther, Dave Kehr, J. Hoberman Elvis Mitchell and Janet Maslin.
Back in 1999, there was a whole brouhaha over the exact reasons why Maslin was stripped of her duties as Times critic ,with many believing it was due to her overtly positive reviews of “The Phantom Menace” and “Eyes Wide Shut.
Scott ended up replacing her.
