After almost two weeks of exhaustive film screenings, Jane Fonda came to Cannes on Friday.
Jane, aged 85, came as part of the L’Oreal contingent, which was headed this year by Kate Winslet. She was also included in a masterclass in which the audience could ask questions.
The masterclass seemed to be no-holds-barred. She admitted Robert Redford was a bad kisser and didn’t work well with women. She added, “He’s a very good person. He just has an issue with women.” She did not elaborate further.
Fonda also criticized the late Jean-Luc Godard as a bad “man.”
Godard, who directed Fonda in 1972’s “Tout Va Bien”, she said, “He was a great filmmaker. I take my hat off. A great filmmaker. But as a man? I’m sorry. No, no.”
I’m not surprised Fonda didn’t like Godard. I doubt he liked her either, but I don’t think he liked anybody, really.
On Saturday, Fonda presented the Palme d’Or to Justin Triet, who made “Anatomy of a Fall.” Triet is the seventh woman ever to win the prize, as Fonda pointed out. Fonda, in a strange comic moment, tossed the Palme at her.
