I mentioned two days ago that if Ben Affleck’s “Air,” starring Matt Damon and Viola Davis, wanted to be a legitimate Oscar contender then it needed to make a decent amount of money at the box-office.
The $90 million biopic opened last night, on a Wednesday. The result was just under $3.7 million. They also did previews on Tuesday and earned just under $1 million, which is included in the 3.7 total.
The film also nabbed an A on CinemaScore, so word of mouth will maybe stretch out its legs. No word yet on what the 5-day tally might be based on that $3.8 million opening. It might get to around $15 million, but that’s purely a guess.
Amazon is banking a lot on “Air,” giving it a worldwide theatrical release. Critics are, at the very least, on its side with a 78 on Metacritic and a glowy 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
