Robert Pattinson is in talks to star in a Chloe Zhao’s “Dracula,” via Daniel Richtman.
This is so fitting considering Pattinson became famous playing a bloodsucker in the “Twilight” franchise.
The film will reportedly follow Dracula after he awakens many years into the future. Themes of being on the fringes of society will be focused on in Zhao’s film.
After winning the Best Director Oscar for “Nomadland” in 2021, Zhao decided to make a Marvel movie. “Eternals,” turned out to be an unmitigated MCU disaster. She’s now trying to find her artistic footing again.
Zhao had confirmed last month that she was almost finished writing the screenplay for “Dracula”. We hadn’t heard anything about the project since it was announced in early 2021.
Zhao’s version is described as an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western with themes of being on society’s fringes. “Dracula” is being spearheaded by Monster-verse studio Universal.
The Chinese-born filmmaker has clearly decided to let go of her more humanist indie roots and found a calling with big studio films. As for the reason why she’s decided to tackle Dracula, Zhao told THR in 2021, “I’ve always been fascinated by vampires.”
After slightly crashing her stock with one of the worst-reviewed Marvel movies of all-time, “Eternals,” Zhao is attempting a big production comeback. I do wonder how much creative freedom Universal will give her on this one. Zhao is set to produce the film via her Highwayman banner alongside Universal.
Her past directing efforts include “The Rider” and “Songs My Brother Taught Me.” She definitely has talent.
Pattinson, much like Adam Driver, seems to base his project choices on who the director attached might be. In the last 10 years, Pattinson has worked with James Gray, David Cronenberg, The Safdies, Claire Denis, Robert Eggers, Christopher Nolan, Bong Joon-ho and Matt Reeves.
