Last year’s test-screenings for the upcoming “Dungeons and Dragons” were very good, but it was still surprising to see the overly enthusiastic reviews start to pop up today.
Fully titled “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the upcoming film just screened at SXSW in Austin. The embargo has thus lifted and it has an 82 on Metacritic and is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, these scores might go down a bit once more reviews start to trickle in, but it’s a much better response than anyone would have expected.
However, Jonathan M. Goldstein, John Francis Daley directed this ‘Dungeons and Dragons,’ and they’re responsible for the excellent “Game Night.” So, the sense of humor that many of these reviews are praising shouldn’t be that surprising.
For some reason, I was invited to a press screening next Saturday. Weekend showings rarely happen for critics. Regardless, I’ll only have an opinion on this one by then. The film is being released in theaters on March 31st.
