The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider took to his podcast to share a surprising update on the next Star Wars movie.
We were under the impression that the next Star Wars would be ‘New Jedi Order,’ starring Daisy Ridley as Rey. There have originally been rumors that Lucasfilm was eyeing an April 2024 production start on this film — I had quickly squashed those rumors by saying that August/September was a realistic aim.
However, Sneider is now hearing that ‘New Jedi Order’ is seemingly no longer the next Star Wars to be released in theatres. Rather, his Disney source claims that the next theatrical Star Wars will be the fourth season of The Mandalorian, which is now taking shape as a movie instead of a TV season.
“The Mandalorian” aired its first three seasons on Disney Plus, and it is a very popular show, starring Pedro Pascal. However, will that same streaming audience want to actually buy a movie ticket for its theatrical continuation?
As for ‘New Jedi Order,’ based on the last credible update, writer Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinder”) was aiming to have his latest draft of the script submitted to LucasFilm before the end of the year. Have more delays happened since then? A ‘Mandalorian’ movie taking its place in the release calendar might suggest that.
Production on ‘New Jedi Order’ was originally supposed to begin this coming April in April, but, as I had reported, was pushed back, due to the strikes, to an August/September launch. The finished product is set for theatrical release on May 22, 2026.
Whether it’s “The Mandalorian” or “New Jedi Order,” the next one will be the first Star Wars release since 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.
