There’s a lack of “big” movies this Christmas, I guess mainstream audiences can go see “Wonka,” ‘Aquaman 2,’ or “The Boys in the Boat.” Best case scenario, you can be more adventurous and check out “The Iron Claw,” and/or “Ferrari.”
However, the big winner seems to be Warner Bros’ “The Color Purple,” a $100 million budgeted musical that made a whopping $18 million on Christmas Day. It’s a hit. Whether it recoups its budget remains to be seen, but it’s a hell of a good start.
Despite my reservations on the film, critics have been fairly generous to ‘The Color Purple,’ it has a 70 on Metacritic and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. Have any of our readers seen it? What did you think? I’m an admirer of the novel, and semi-liked Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation, but found this latest one a tad too stagey and glossy for my tastes.
