As various critics groups dish out their top films of the year, I’m only trying to post about what’s worth mentioning.
One such list has arrived. I always look forward to Film Comment’s year-end poll of critics, filmmakers and curators. This year’s results, as voted by over 100 participants, are interesting to sift through. A lot of unusual choices, and some obvious ones.
There are a lot of titles from Cannes here (seven of the top 10 premiered on the Croisette) . Also, notice how “Oppenheimer,” one of this year’s critical darlings, doesn’t fare too well with the highbrows. “Past Lives,” and “Poor Things” are also completely absent from the top 20.
Film Comment is a 61 year old magazine that is basically the US equivalent of Cahiers du Cinema or Sight and Sound. 2023 is the official publication of Film at Lincoln Center. It heavily focuses on art-house, and avant-garde filmmaking from around the world.
