UPDATED: Filming has quietly began in New Jersey in November.
EARLIER: In an interview with Le Figaro, Cate Blanchett doesn’t want to delve into a film she’s doing with Jim Jarmusch. Um .. she’s making a film with Jim Jarmusch?
I can report that Jarmusch is set to shoot titled “Father Mother Sister Brother” early next year in Paris. That, I know. However, it looks as though Blanchett will be part of that project which is set to be Jarmusch’s first film in over five years.
This past April, at the 2023 Overlook Film Festival, Jarmusch sat down for a conversation concerning the tenth anniversary of his great “Only Lovers Left Alive.” During that discussion, Jarmusch mentioned that he was preparing to shoot a new film in the fall.
“The film we’re preparing now for late this year to shoot, probably, I think, may have no music […] It’s a very subtle film; it’s very quiet. And I think music could move it too much one way — it’s a funny and sad film, right? It sort of has both woven in. I don’t know if I wanna have music to add some other thing over it. It doesn’t really want it so far.”
Of course, the strikes happened and the film was delayed. So, it looks as though an early 2024 shoot is now being planned.
The Ohio-born filmmaker has been a mainstay of the indie movie scene since the ‘80s. His minimalist, unhurried and idiosyncratic films don’t follow transitional narrative structures, but rather tend to focus more on mood.
Jarmusch’s best films are “Paterson,” “Only Lovers Left Alive,” “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Broken Flowers,” “Down By Law,” and “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” However, he has such an eclectic filmography that I’m sure some of his other works will be mentioned in the comments below.
Meanwhile, Blanchett is keeping herself very busy these days. She’s just wrapped shooting Guy Maddin’s “Rumors” and has Alfonso Cuaron’s Apple TV series “Disclaimer” coming up in 2024.
