Filmmaker Dee Rees’ first two films were strong statements — 2011’s “Pariah” remains one of the most underrated feature debuts of the last decade, and 2017’s “Mudbound” was a complex account of post-WWII racial tensions in 1940s Mississippi.
Her third film, 2020’s “The Last Thing He Wanted,” an ‘80s-set political thriller produced by Netflix, was an incoherent mess and it sucked out the momentum she had accumulated with “Pariah” and “Mudbound.”
Variety is now reporting that Rees has set her sights on her next feature – “a stylized dark comedy meant to visualize a central character’s frantic stream of consciousness”.
“It’s a weird, experimental thing,” Rees tells Variety, “[I’ve explored] comedic elements in my films, but this is the first time where it’s a kind of a dark, sad satire.” She didn’t mention a title or plot details, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for this one.
