Earlier this week, it was announced that David Robert Mitchell was making a sequel to his 2015 horror film “It Follows.” It seems however that he’s working on another film, and this one sounds much better.
In a recent Production Weekly listing, there’s a Mitchell project in “active development” titled “Evergreen Pines And The Fading Summer,” the synopsis reads as follows:
After being dropped off at sleepaway camp by his wife and daughter, a middle aged man is pitted against other campers in competition, while piecing together the disappearance of his best friend and the emergence of an elusive grey beast that guards a hidden treasure.
That is one whacked out synopsis. Some additional details … Supposedly, the lead character is at this middle-aged summer camp to find Vardaman, the missing childhood friend. There are also rumors of a beast in the woods and a hidden treasure. After finding Vardaman hiding in the woods, the two men head out to find the beast in the hopes it will lead them to the treasure ..
Daniel Richtman is also now reporting on the project and he has none other than Jim Carrey attached to the star in the film.
Carrey hasn't had a “lead” role since his misbegotten 2018 thriller “Hard Crimes” — has anyone actually seen it? Regardless, Carrey hasn't really made a "great" movie since 2004's “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Sure, I guess, 2008’s "I Love You Phillip Morris" was a watchable venture for the actor, but it’s already been forgotten about.
Carrey had this incredible stretch of films in the ‘90s and aughts, which started in 1994 with three highly successful comedies ("The Mask," "Ace Ventura," "Dumb and Dumber"), and then he starred in four high-quality dramas ("The Cable Guy," "The Truman Show," "Man on the Moon," and ‘Eternal Sunshine’).
It’s been wasted potential ever since — a real shame since Carrey is fairly talented and, if given the right script, can really hit it out of the ballpark. Maybe Mitchell’s film will be his comeback vehicle?
Mitchell, who hasn’t released a film since 2018’s “Under the Silver Lake,” now has three projects lined up in his future: “Evergreen Pines And The Fading Summer,” “They Follow” and “Flowervale Street.”
