Last month I had reported that Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin was going to be shooting a new film titled “Rumours,” with a set production start on October 9th. That was big enough news for fans of Maddin, but today’s update has sent our expectations over the stratosphere.
None other than Cate Blanchett has been added to the cast of “Rumours,” which is being billed as a “comedy” (although that might be a very loose term considering that this is Guy Maddin we’re talking about here). Blanchett is one of the great actresses of her era and anything she does must be paid attention to.
”Rumours” has been granted a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement allowing the production, which isn’t associated with the AMPTP, to proceed. No further details have been revealed at this time, but I gather trades will be snapping up this story at any moment.
Ultra-surrealist Maddin, the man behind “The Saddest Music In The World” and “My Winnipeg,” among many others, is one of the most eccentric filmmakers out there. His last dreamily realized film was 2017’s “The Green Fog.” We can expect “Rumours” to be released next year.
