We are less than one year away from Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” being released in theaters.
‘Joker’ cinematographer Lawrence Sher is telling Definition Magazine that “Joker: Folie à Deux 2” is “in the final stages of production”:
We’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.
In a recent interview, Sher had mentioned that ‘Folie à Deux’ used Francis Ford Coppola’s “One from the Heart” as a template and starting point for its visual style. This probably means that ‘Folie à Deux’ is going for an eye-popping, colourful and sumptuous look. Despite Coppola’s film being a major commercial and critical flop, it’s still one of the most beautiful-looking films that I’ve ever seen.
“Joker: Folie à Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is being released in theatres on October 4, 2024. Why so late? Probably because the first one had a similar date; a month earlier it had premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it surprisingly won the Golden Lion.
I gather that Sher saying ‘Folie à Deux’ is “risky” implies that we’ll be getting a full-on musical with this one. That’s been the rumor for a while and it’s been, more or less, confirmed by a few sources.
All I know is that they better have a great story to tell here because “Joker” didn’t need a sequel, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The 2019 film perfectly depicted the zeitgeist via Phoenix’s deranged urban savior.
Last Spring, Grace Randolph had reported that ‘Folie à Deux’ would tell its story via the perspectives of both Gaga’s Harley Quinn and Phoenix’s Joker. The film’s main plot would revolve around musical therapy sessions at Arkham Asylum.
The R-rated “Joker” grossed over a billion dollars worldwide and earned 12 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actor statuette for Phoenix.
