I’m now scrambling to find a seat for tonight’s 7pm all-press screening of “M3Gan.” I was totally going to brush it off until the review embargo lifted this morning …
Yes, I know, reviews have been uniformly positive. It has a whopping 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and it’s in the 70s on Metacritic. What has the world come to! Maybe, it’s good? It was already projected to have a $17-20 million opening on Friday.
Audiences have been laughing at the “M3GAN” trailer for a few weeks now. It’s a silly concept that’s been done to death, especially with the “Chucky” movies. The gist of the positive reviews make it out to be a horror movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The title character is a a life-like killer doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
Gerard Johnstone directed “M3GAN.” He’s the New Zealand-born filmmaker who also gave us “Housebound,” which, come to think of it, was a pretty good horror movie.
