I don’t know about you, but Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) getting nominated made my morning. The grassroots campaign worked! You’re going to have a lot of pissed off people now saying that she stole a woman of color’s nomination — Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler, snubbed. Don’t listen to them. Riseborough absolutely deserved this nomination for her ferociously intense performance.
Ana De Armas (Blonde) also got in for her incredible work as Marilyn Monroe. While we’re at it, Mia Goth (Pearl) was ROBBED.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” was a major player this morning, nabbing nine nominations, including Best Picture. That’s quite impressive for a film that barely made a dent when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this past September. Word of mouth grew from there for Edward Berger’s film.
We were all wondering who would nab that elusive fifth spot in the Best Actor category. Well, it turned out to be Paul Mescal (Aftersun). It's well-deserved, although part of me really wanted Adam Sandler (Hustle) to sneak in there. For the first time in 88 years, all the Best Actor nominees are first timers.
“Top Gun: Maverick” getting snubbed in Best Cinematography is quite off given that it’s been winning almost every award in this category these last few months. That snub along with Kosinski and Cruise not getting nominated means that the film is probably not winning Best Picture.
It looks as though it’ll be a race between ”Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Fabelmans.” “TÁR” is the dark horse.
The big shocker in the Best Director and Best Picture categories were Ruben Ostlund and Triangle of Sadness. Cannes must be ecstatic about their Palme d’Or winner getting nominated. No female directing nominees. Uh-oh. Cue “Women in Film” releasing a statement in 3, 2, 1…
Paul Dano (Fabelmans) got snubbed in favour of Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway). Good performance. At least Judd Hirsch got in for his memorable 8-minute cameo in “The Fabelmans” — a grassroots campaign now needs to happen to push him for an Oscar.
Can't wait to see My Year of Dicks win best animated short.
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” was the most-nominated film with 11 nods, followed by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” with 9. “Elvis” also did very well by nabbing 8 nominations this morning.
I can’t wrap this up without mentioning how “Babylon” was completely shut out from the main categories. A brutal result for Paramount who have been campaigning hard for this film to, at the very least, get a Best Picture nomination.
