Angel Studios’ “King of Kings” is flirting with massive breakout territory as it enters Friday with nearly $17M worth of presold tickets. This would imply we're looking at over $25M worth of tickets sold through Sunday — and we haven’t even reached Easter/Holy weekend yet. This one will have legs.
The animated biblical epic, which retells the life story of Jesus Christ, debuts in theaters today; the voice cast includes the likes of Oscar Isaac, Uma Thurman, Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, Mark Hamill, and Forest Whitaker. The faith-based film has a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audience scores are, unsurprisingly, through-the-roof amazing.
The film, loosely based on the Charles Dickens book "The Life of Our Lord," was directed by VFX expert Seong-ho Jang, and comes to us from the distributor of “Sound of Freedom,” a breakout indie hit that managed to gross nearly $250M domestically back in the summer of 2023.
