Blumhouse founder Jason Blum is predicting this year’s Best Picture winner will be S.S. Rajamouli’s “RRR.” He has such passionate admiration for the film that he’s gone to publicly back it over any other contender.
“I’m going with ‘RRR’ winning best pic,” Blum tweeted. “You heard it here first. Mark it down, please. If I’m right, I am awarding myself my own Oscar. It’s RRR time. Don’t miss it. And no I’m not involved in any way. Nor do I know anyone associated with the movie. Just see it.”
At this point we don’t even know if “RRR” will even be nominated for Best Picture. It has a shot. It’s definitely turned into a dark horse contender this awards season. Its momentum has been steadily growing ever since Rajamouli won the NYFCC’s Best Director award in December. One thing’s for certain: there’s this massive campaign currently going for it.
“RRR” has become a sensation in the US, with incredible numbers on Netflix and critical backing to boot. Why India would decide on the unknown “Last Film Show” is mind-boggling. However, as far as Oscar voters go, is it realistic enough to believe that they are willing to watch a 3-hour hyperkinetic Indian action musical about the evils of British colonialism?
