UPDATED: The conversation with Chazelle was very interesting, with the filmmaker explaining just how difficult the “Babylon” shoot was in trying to portray the debauchery of 1920s Hollywood.
“It was about capturing the spirit of that time which was a lot more Wild West. They are building a city and industry from scratch and to do that you need a certain kind of crazy person. I don’t think it is surprising that the people that did that, did a lot of drugs and partied a lot.”
Set to the score of ‘20s big band music, the trailer shown felt like one big party, with Margot Robbie’s character even saying, “I just want everyone to party forever.” We see vivid images: an alligator on a leash, illicit drug use, topless women, and Pitt shooting several guns, dancing in his underwear and falling off of a balcony.
EARLIER: I’ll be attending the “In Conversation” with Damien Chazelle this afternoon in Toronto.
I had mentioned last week that a trailer is ready for release and might be coming today. It makes sense, release it after we get to see it at the “In Conversation.” That would be the no-brainer plan for Paramount to finally launch this thing.
The trailer has officially been rated and ready to go.
TIFF has probably been chosen as the launchpad for what likely be an immense awards campaign for the film. Everyone is anticipating it. This is Chazelle’s go-for-broke epic, a 3-hour exploration of deranged 1920s Hollywood.
Last week, the first photos for “Babylon” were released. The costumes looked outrageously over the top and colourful. If the film is as good as we think it is then we’re looking at across-the-board nominations come Osca
