In this latest edition of “Paul Schrader reviews …” We have the prolific writer-director of “Master Gardener” tackling Todd Field’s “TAR,” which he saw at Venice.
The film stars Cate Blanchard, err, Blanchett and Nina Hoss. It garnered rave reviews from critics at both Venice and Telluride. Its Metacritic score is currently at an astonishing 90.
Schrader writes that he loved the first two hours of “TAR,” but was left cold by the last 45 or so minutes of Field’s film. Schrader calls the first 2/3 of “TAR” an “astonishment”, but describes the third act as “veering into mediocrity and simplicity”
This is essentially a similar reaction to what Jeffrey Wells posted this morning.
