An excerpt for David Ehrlich’s “Bardo” review:
“Bardo” opens with a flashback in which Silverio’s wife Lucía (Griselda Siciliani) gives birth to a CGI baby named Mateo who immediately tells the doctor that “this world is too fucked up,” and demands to be shoved back inside his mother’s vagina — a wish that is granted without hesitation.
I don’t care about the middling reviews, I want to see this movie ASAP. It looks and sounds like an experience.
Netflix’s Kris Tapley tweeted out this video of Inarritu passionately chatting it up, cigarette in hand, with Chloe Zhao at the Telluride Netflix party last night.
Meanwhile, Zhao, Lulu Wang, and Barry Jenkins are doing their best to defend Inarritu and his film on social media. Zhao wrote that she “laughed, sobbed and was overwhelmed with emotion” while watching “Bardo.”
As it stands, “Bardo” has a 59% rotten score (based on 22 reviews) and a 53 MC score. The knives had already been sharpened against Inarritu way before his latest was unveiled last week at Venice.
