If you want to catch Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Bardo” in September then you’ll have to go to either Venice or Telluride. Otherwise, the film is not screening at TIFF and NYFF, that’s what I’ve been told.
This isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, as far as the film’s quality, but might just be the way things worked out. If the film is well-received at Venice-Telluride then that will only build anticipation further for “Bardo.”
Three of Inarritu’s last four films were Oscar-nominated for Best Picture; 2006’s “Babel,” 2014’s “Birdman” and 2015’s “The Revenant.”
“Bardo” is Inarritu’s autobiographical film, shot in Mexico, that will inevitably be compared to “Roma.” It’ll probably be more accessible than Alfonso Cuaron’s film. Netflix will be in charge and campaign behind it.
