Having seen it two weeks ago, I’m kind of itching to rewatch “Top Gun: Maverick” outside the exhaustive Cannes setting. I was mixed on it in my review, but I tend to give films I watch at Cannes a second shot.
The film is set to open with an astounding $150 million gross this weekend, that makes it Tom Cruise’s first ever box-office opening of over $100 million. It’s about time.
The reviews are quite good as well. A 78 on Metacritic is impressive, so is a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes critics are clearly eating up the nostalgia factor with this one. I’m hearing a lot of “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore” comments from people. Whereas in 1987, they were saying “please, stop making ‘em like this.”
I assume many of our readers have have seen “Top Gun: Maverick” by now, what did you think? Do the reviews do it justice? Is it being overpraised?
