Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” finally has a trailer, but, as suspected, they’ve expertly edited it to show the least amount of footage as possible. Meanwhile, a poster has also been released and that same Brendan Fraser photo is stamped on it, but this time his face looks … shinier?
The 63 second trailer is mostly composed of quotes from critics with just a handful of closeups of Brendan Fraser’s face. To recap, A24 released a trailer, but one that barely shows anything and, to boot, on Election Day. Good job, A24.
The Film Stage’s CJ Prince:
“A24 dropping the trailer for The Whale on election day...genius move. Like they knew discourse would happen so they dropped it on the one day of the year where they knew another discourse would overpower it.”
The average viewer comes out of it not really knowing what the heck the movie is about and, know what? That’s perfectly fine. Trailers shouldn’t spoil anything and A24 has done what they needed to do — the film will be released in around 4 weeks. Now there’s no need for them to release anything else.
I just feel bad for the guy whose job was to edit the trailer: “Here’s 10 seconds of footage, make a trailer.”
