Let’s add “Amelie” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s name to our list of filmmakers who don’t have kind words to say about superhero movies.
After Whedon slammed Jeunet’s filmmaking abilities for the 1997 film “Alien: Resurrection,” which Whedon penned, Jeunet criticized Whedon’s films as being only “for morons,” which, according to Jeunet, is most MCU fans.
“I know Joss Whedon said some bad things about me,” Jeunet told The Independent. “I don’t care. I know if Joss Whedon had made the film himself, it probably would have been a big success. He’s very good at making films for American geeks, something for morons.”
The “Amélie” director continued, “Because he’s very good at making Marvel films. I hate this kind of movie. It’s so silly, so stupid.”
It’s quite stunning how, just in the last few years, many filmmakers have decided to criticize superhero movies for what they are: infantilism of the highest order. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but a growing backlash against them has now become an undeniable movement.
Over these last few years, I’ve been updating a list of all the directors that have publicly criticized Marvel movies. We can now add Jean-Pierre Jeunet name to this very impressive list that includes Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Denis Villeneuve, Bong Joon-ho, Lucrecia Martel, David Cronenberg, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, David Fincher, Paul Verehoeven, Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, James Gray, Jane Campion, James Mangold, Martin McDonagh, Luc Besson, William Friedkin, Ken Loach, James Cameron and John Woo.
