Todd Field’s “TÁR” was released over the weekend to rapturous reviews. It’s probably the most critically-acclaimed movie of the year.
Field’s first film in over 15 years is also dominating at the specialty box-office. The psychological drama has posted the second-best per-theater average of 2022 only behind “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and it’s $50,000 per-theater average in April.
“TÁR” opened in limited release at four locations in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, grossing an estimated $160,000 for a $40,000 per-theater average.
However, not everybody will like “TÁR,” it’s very much a critic-proof movie, and audiences will likely be a little more puzzled by Field’s opaque vision. I loved it and then some.
