Tonight’s L.A. premiere of Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” has been postponed due to “Omicron concerns.” Kill me now. Add in the fact that the Berlin Film Festival is thinking of moving its February event to the summer, the in-person European Film Awards got cancelled and the next “Fast and the Furious” instalment has been delayed, well, you get the picture. What we now have is a total déjà vu of last winter.
I’m telling you this right now: the industry will most likely be in partial shutdown again because of the growing hysteria going on due to Omicron. At this point, there’s no way around it and we haven’t even gotten close to the peak impact of the variant at home. Europeans are all starting to feel it already.
You might imagine the organizers behind next January’s Sundance Film Festival are doing somersaults over their decision to make their entire lineup available digitally. I don’t know a single person who is going to Park City for the in-person screenings next month.
