The most discussed movie on social media these days is without a doubt Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.” Critics hated it, but audiences seem to be really liking it (especially my in-laws). It’s also currently the #1 most-watched movie on Netflix in 88 of 89 countries.
However. McKay seems rather irked by the critical bashing that his movie has gotten over these last few weeks. Yesterday, he tweeted the following:
“Loving all the heated debate about our movie. But if you don’t have at least a small ember of anxiety about the climate collapsing (or the US teetering) I’m not sure Don’t Look Up makes any sense. It’s like a robot viewing a love story. “WHy ArE thEir FacEs so cLoSe ToGether?”
Oof, where to begin? McKay is being a tad ignorant in his response to detractors of the film. He could just sit back, relax and bask in the fact that his movie is #1 but it’s quite clear that he's saying that if you don't like his film, you just don't get its “importance.”
A 77% audience score on RT, and a 7.3 on IMDB is nothing to feel ashamed about. However, contras that with its 55 rotten rating and a 53 on Metacritic. Yikes.
No matter how dreadful the reviews are, McKay’s film is a top 5 Best Picture contender. And, know what? I think it has a decent chance of winning. McKay is a director for whom critics have always had semi-disdain for, ready to throw darts at him every time he has a new film out. It’s the total opposite when it comes to his peers in the industry, and word is that the SAG, and DGA screenings of “Don’t Look Up” have been playing like gangbusters.
