I spoke to Hollywood-Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells about Jessica Crispin’s Guardian piece, which tackled the epidemic of virtue-signalling Kool-Aid critics (MP3), and (b) why exactly Todd Phillips‘ film isn’t being considered a leading Best Picture nominee by pundits? (MP3 )
As we speak, Joker, which leads all 2020 Oscar films with 11 nominations, has joined the 4-pack of Best Picture frontrunners (The Irishman, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, 1917 and Parasite). Is it out-of-left-field thinking to believe that Todd Phillips’ film stands a chance at winning the big prize? Not really, the film is passionately loved within the industry, Phoenix got a standing ovation at the Globes when he won Best Actor (Drama) and, well, this could be another opportunity for Academy voters to give the middle finger to the social media hounds, much like they did last year with “Green Book,” by awarding a film which is loathed by the “woke” crowd.
