I keep hearing about The Rewatchables, a podcast courtesy of The Ringer. The gist of the podcast has the hosts tackling an old-ish film by rewatching it and then discussing that rewatch.
On the most recent episode of The Rewatchables, none other than Quentin Tarantino stopped by to discuss Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” Tarantino explains that a third rewatch of Nolan’s WWI film catapulted it into the #2 slot on his Best if the Decade list. “It wasn’t until that third time where I was gauging it for [my best of the decade list], that I could finally see past the spectacle into the people, into the people of the story. I could finally see the forest for the trees,” he explained.
“It’s a symphony, everything works,” Tarantino added, claiming it was also his favourite Nolan movie (“Batman Begins” is #2 and “The Prestige” #3).
”Dunkirk” also struck me as great movie on third viewing. The first two were hazier experiences, the multiples timelines consistently clashing into each other — but QT is right, once you get the gist of it all it’s an absolutely exhilarating experience. Perhaps we’ll be getting a Best of The Decade list from Tarantino, maybe even in the next month or so? He’s clearly working on a list since he’s specific where “Dunkirk” ranks.
