The great Spike Lee seems rather amused about EEAO’s Daniel Scheinert calling “Malcom X” a “crime movie” during a recent appearance on the Criterion Closet. Nobody’s ever thought of Spike’s masterful biopic as being a part of the crime genre until Scheinert came up with that whopper. It’s all in good fun:
“I’d never heard that description before [laughing] But look, I’m not going to kill the guy. I’ve misspoken many times in my life, too. So I’m calling on Black Twitter to give the guy a break – because when Black Twitter gets on your ass, they get on your ass.”
Other Scheinert picks from the Criterion Closet included The Before Trilogy, Police Story 1 & 2, Godzilla (1954), Tampopo and Repo Man.
If you’ve been reading pundits of late, Scheinert and his directing partner Daniel Kwan might actually win the Directing Oscar next month. I still firmly believe it’s between Todd Field (TÁR) and Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans).
