I won’t even bother quoting Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis’ recent condemnations of, in their view, the racist Academy. There’s no point in beating a dead horse twice.
What I will say is that, amidst all this controversy, people have quickly forgotten that there are two non-white performers nominated in the Best Actress category. Do Latinas (Ana De Armas) and Asians (Michelle Yeoh) not count anymore?
That’s 40% of the nominees in the Best Actress category being minorities. In fact, The Oscars have now set a new record for the most Asian actors nominated in a single year with four. If you add in all the broader categories, then that’s also a record number.
All of the whiners keep saying how hard black actors and actresses have it but, correct me if I’m wrong, haven’t black performers won way more acting Oscars than Asian actors? It’s not even close.
But please, don’t say that to Viola Davis, Gina Prince-Blythewood and Danielle Deadwyler, they think the Academy and the system are against them. Don’t they have any solidarity with other minorities and people of color. It’s not a good look, and I don’t think will gain them a lot of sympathy.
Pardon me if this comes out wrong, but they all just sound like sore losers. “If I don’t get nominated and win, it’s because you’re all racist!” is basically what I’m gathering from all this.
The constant whining, and all of these accusations, is becoming too much of a distraction for the bigger picture of this awards season: that Mia Goth got ROBBED of an Oscar nomination. Now, THERE is something to get all up in arms about.
