There were only a handful of big studio movies I was looking forward to this summer. Most have been delayed to a later release date (“The French Dispatch,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Soul,” “A Quiet Place II,” “In the Heights”) whereas one remaining title is still set for a July release, although I presume it will be rescheduled (that would be Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”). However, today there some good news came in the form of at least one hotly anticipated summer movie skipping theaters for on-demand rental.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, and movie theaters closing nationwide because of it, Sony has decided to join the fray and have one of their theatrical releases become available early in digital format. The Vin Diesel-starring “Bloodshot,” which happened to be released last Friday in theaters, will be available for digital purchase and rental next Tuesday.

A game-changing moment for the theatrical vs streaming debate happened today, albeit under depressing circumstances. With movie theaters closing nationwide and millions of people self-quarantining and social distancing at home, it’s a no-brainer opportunity for studios to transition some of their current and upcoming theatrical titles to VOD.
