Rami Malek's Acceptance Speech Censored in China; Words “Gay Man" Replaced With “Special Person"

February 27, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Chinese streaming site Mango TV cut OFF the phrase "gay man" from Rami Malek’s Oscar speech.

Malek was trying to honor young people struggling with their identity when he said “listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life unapologetically himself,” but chinese censors replaced “gay man” with “special group.”

Screen grabs of the moment went viral on Chinese social media.

China is known to ban or censor gay-themed content in apprehensive ways. Last year, for example, they banned gay romance “Call Me by Your Name” from appearing at the Beijing International Film Festival. Gay-themed storytelling has also been banned from television for many years now, ditto online streaming content.

Pundits: Rami Malek is Front-Runner to Win Best Actor Golden Globe

January 3, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

It quite honestly looks like the Best Actor Oscar is currently Rami Malek's to lose. For the longest stretch I thought Bradley Cooper's performance in "A Star Is Born" was the one-to-beat, but Malek has been picking up considerable steam the last few weeks and 'Star' has been on the downslide.

Critics and Audiences seem to be disagreeing about 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” has delivered great numbers at the week-end box-office. When all is said and done, it will have delivered a $50M debut. The rock biopic has been reborn! Not to mention audiences are digging the hell out of this movie with an A grade on CinemaScore and astonishing 8.4 rating on IMDB (based on 34k votes). However, the reviews from critics were weak. The movie has a mediocre 59% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 237 reviews).

‘Bohemian Rhapsody' could have used more of that rhapsody [Review]

Bohemian-Rhapsody-2.jpg

Nothing bold or original is splashed onto the screen in Bryan Singer's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Maybe that's the point. After all, what can a filmmaker possibly do to break the mold of the rise and fall biopic? It's not like critically acclaimed biopics such as "Ray," "I Walk the Line," "Bound for Glory," "Straight Outta Compton," and "Coal Miner's Daughter" had groundbreaking narratives either. No, but what made them work was the filmmaking and the way they told their stories. For all the conventional tropes tackled in these films, the filmmaking had a you-are-there sense of wonder that made them palpably felt and lived-in.

Review: Why even remake "Papillon" to begin with? This new version doesn't answer that question.

August 23, 2018 Jordan Ruimy
Papillon-Movie-Review-2018-Charlie-Hunnam.jpg

When Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman tried to escape Devil’s Island back in 1973, the result was the messy, passionate, and watchable "Papillon."

The decision to remake "Papillon" in this day and age is a rather odd one, especially given the fact that a) these sort of prison escape flicks are a dime a dozen and are steeped in common genre clichés, and b) well, the original "Papillon" wasn't that great.
