As we await the next Joel and Ethan Coen collaboration, the former was a guest of honor at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
He was there to discuss two films: the first, John Huston’s 1987 “The Dead”, and the second both his and his brother Ethan’s 2013 landmark, 'Inside Llewyn Davis.'"
The Coen Brothers are one of the great filmmakers of, oh, I’d say, the last 35 years or so. They’ve consistently put out great movies for almost four decades now.
And yet, they didn’t show up in yesterday’s Sight and Sound top 250. The best excuse I could find was that they had so many great movies to choose from that a vote split occured. Nobody seems to come to a consensus as to what is their “masterpiece.”
Let’s try to end the debate here once and for all. What’s the Coen’s greatest achievement? Which film should the S&S poll’s voters all vote for in unison 10 years from now? There are so many contenders to pick from: “Fargo,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Barton Fink,” “Millers Crossing,” “Raising Arizona,” “A Serious Man”. If I had gun pointed to my head, and was forced to choose: “No Country For Old Men.”
