Some more Cannes intel coming in.
An animated film has cracked this year’s competition for the first time since 2008’s “Waltz With Bashir.” We’re not sure what film it is, but I’m digging into this one today and will hopefully have an answer soon.
Did Fremaux convince Hayao Miyazaki to debut his film at Cannes? Wouldn’t that be something?
Most of the trades were saying that Miyazaki’s “How Do You Live” would skip Cannes for a domestic release in Japan and then maybe go to Venice for its international premiere.
If it’s not Miyazaki then what other films might stand a chance? Maybe Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal’s much-buzzed “They Shot the Piano Player” or maybe Pixar’s “Elemental.”
Cannes very rarely has animated films competing for the Palme d’Or, it’s happened a few times, but you can probably count in one hand the titles: “Dumbo,” “Peter Pan,” “Persepolis,” “Waltz With Bashir,” “Shrek,” and “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.”
The years 2001-2008 seemed like a bit of a renaissance as far as animated films at Cannes are concerned. Here’s hoping they’ve chosen a worthy film for this year’s competition.
