Variety’s Elsa Keslassy has the scoop that Cannes Director Thierry Fremaux traveled to L.A. earlier this month to watch Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
She goes on to speculate what we’ve already known: that the film will most likely be having its world premiere at Cannes in May:
Of course, there could still be a last minute change of plans by the time the lineup is unveiled in April, but it’s looking promising enough that Scorsese is even rumored to have reserved a suite at one of the posh hotels along the Croisette.
Sources caution, however, that no formal offer has been made from Cannes and there is no final decision about whether Scorsese and company will embark on a trans-Atlantic promotional journey to France in May.
The Variety piece reads as if it’s not a done deal and that “Killers of the Flower Moon” is still not confirmed for Cannes. But, it is. ‘Killers’ at Cannes is turning into this big open secret that cannot be announced officially, for now. At least, not until the entire Cannes lineup is announced during the third week of April.
Keslassy goes on to add that if ‘Killers’ wants to play in competition, and aim for the Palme d’Or, then Apple would only be able to stream the film on its platform 15 months after its theatrical release.
I dont think that’ll be an issue since I just can’t see Scorsese’s film being in competition. It’ll probably have a big splashy out-of-competition slot, and that’ll be more than enough to build up buzz for its potential fall release date.
