Seven days ago, after Emily Blunt’s stylist posted the same insinuation, actor “Oppenheimer” Matthew Modine tweeted about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film premiering at the Cannes Film Festival.
Well, that seems to have been all for nothing. Modine deleted the tweet and Variety is now saying it’s a no-go for “Oppenheimer” at Cannes. What a vibe killer!
The rumor seemed to have started after Le Film Francais, France’s version of Variety, hinted at the Cannes appearance last month. Again, Variety is saying Universal got cold feet, it’s not happening:
Some movies won’t make the transatlantic journey. After “Oppenheimer” cast member Matthew Modine tweeted a poster of the movie with the hashtag #Cannes2023, speculation that the Christopher Nolan feature would debut at the festival intensified. However, Modine quickly deleted his message, and insiders say that “Oppenheimer” will likely premiere somewhere else and closer to its July release date.
Also, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is not going. Variety implied there had been discussions of a possible bow for Gerwig’s film, but Warner Bros has decided to skip the festival route with this one.
And Warner Bros. has discussed sending Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, but the film is more likely to launch nearer to Barbie’s Malibu home. Even if the studio skips the fest, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will touch down in France. He’s hosting a dinner at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc with former Vanity Fair editor and current Air Mail chief Graydon Carter.
What we’re left with as far as big Hollywood productions go is Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and James Mangold’s “Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” What other big studio productions could go? It turns out, not many more. It might just be Mangold and Scorsese’s films.
