Here we go again.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost every top category today at the Indie Spirit Awards. “EEAAO” won Best Picture, Lead Performance, Supporting Performance, Director, Screenplay. It was obvious this was going to happen.
This EEAAO triumph happened in front of around 10,000 viewers watching on YouTube. I’m pretty sure my neighbor next door gets a bigger audience with her weekly livestreams.
However, even if the indie film scene is going through tough times at the moment, I can easily give you ten independent films from last year that deserved more love than EEAAO: “Watcher,” “TÁR,” “Funny Pages”, “Aftersun,” “Nitram,” “Resurrection,” “God’s Country,” “Pearl,” “Emily the Criminal.”
EEAAO is more than just a movie now. It’s a meme. A big, giant, inclusive meme that, according to its fans, has lots of heart: The hot dog fingers! Racacooine! That rock with the jiggly eye! The Bagel Short Round!
I feel like we’re currently living in this bizarre cultural idiocracy. Mike Judge’s movie seems more relevant than ever before — all we need is a President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho to complete the transition to full-on idiocracy.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should beware of the EEAAO meme, but they won’t. They’ve taken the bait. EEAAO will win Best Picture come next Sunday
