Ridley Scott's ‘Treasure Island' Sets November 11, 2027 Release via Sony

September 30, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

Sony dropped a bunch of release dates on Wednesday, and a handful of them are of real interest.

The Michelle Yeoh thriller "The Surgeon" kicks things off on April 2, 2027, followed by "Narcs" on August 20. On top of that, Justin Lin's "Helldivers" adaptation, with Alan Ritchson leading the charge, slides out of 2027 to June 9, 2028. And Takashi Yamazaki, the director of "Godzilla Minus One," sees his "Grandgear" move up from February to January 14, 2028, to grab the MLK holiday weekend.

Now, the two biggies. Ridley Scott's "Treasure Island" has landed a November 11, 2027, release date, which means this film is absolutely happening. Meanwhile, "24 Jump Street" — they’re sarcastically skipping ‘23’ — will close out 2027 for Sony with a December 10 date.

Let's start with "24 Jump Street," which Rodney Rothman ("Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse") is directing from a script he co-wrote with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are all back. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two films, are only producing this time. Losing Lord and Miller behind the camera is not a good sign.

Then there's "Treasure Island," which is the one I'm most curious about. Sony is calling it a "fresh spin" on the classic. Scott turns 89 in November, and it's certainly a risk to have him helm such an immense project, especially as he's coming off "Napoleon," "Gladiator II" and "The Dog Stars." A November slot also suggests Sony thinks this could play to awards voters.

The film is set to star Hugh Jackman, while Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper are circling roles. Jack Thorne, who is red-hot these days thanks to his work on the acclaimed Netflix series "Adolescence" and "Lord of the Flies," wrote the screenplay.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 adventure novel, which has been told and retold many times, "Treasure Island" follows young Jim Hawkins as he discovers a treasure map and sets out on a dangerous sea voyage that becomes a deadly contest of loyalty and deception with Long John Silver. Although Blackbeard is absent from Stevenson's novel, Scott's adaptation appears to be working the legendary pirate into the story.

Scott will start filming on November 1, which will take place in the Canary Islands, where Scott has been scouting locations. Will yet another version of "Treasure Island" be welcomed by the masses?
