Back in 2024, several studios were in a bidding war for Adam Wingard’s “Onslaught” — billed as a return to his thriller indie roots. A24 finally landed the project.
The film wrapped production in January 2025, and some expected it to potentially hit theaters that same year, but post-production seems to have taken longer than expected. We now finally have a release date.
A trailer for “Onslaught” is now playing before “Backrooms” in theaters nationwide. While the trailer hasn’t been released online yet, it did reveal that the film will hit theaters on September 4, 2026. That’s 20 months since production wrapped. Maybe A24 was waiting for the right date to position this one — Labor Day weekend seems like an odd fit, but we’ll see how it works out.
Adria Arjona leads the film as a struggling mother, living in a trailer park, who aims to protect her loved ones from a threat that escaped a secret military base, while mercenaries try to contain it
According to Bloody Disgusting, the “Onslaught” trailer feels like a return to the style and energy that Wingard and writer Simon Barrett brought to “The Guest.” However, they describe “Onslaught” as feeling more like a Jason Voorhees-style action thriller, with the villain even sporting what appears to be a dark hockey mask, and a Sarah Connor-esque heroine at its center.
The film reunites Wingard and Barrett, the team behind “You’re Next” (2011) and “The Guest” (2014). Wingard is coming off the commercial success of “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the latter of which grossed over $572M worldwide. It’s a real shame that Wingard decided to expend all of his creative energy on silly kaiju and monster movies.
Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens also star in “Onslaught,” alongside Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, Drew Starkey, and Alex “Poatan” Pereira.
Notably, A24 currently has an untitled film scheduled for release on October 23. Now that “Onslaught” has secured a date, it’s reasonable to assume Jeremy Saulnier’s aptly titled “October,” set on Halloween, is the likely candidate for that slot. That project also appears to be a higher priority for the studio than Wingard’s film.
