I had completely forgotten that this film was even released. It doesn’t help they did not screen it for press, and that most of the reviews came from critics who had to pay for a ticket to see it. Regardless, yes, Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey” does exist, starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, and it has turned into an absolute bomb.
The film, shot three years ago, was finally released in the U.S. on May 15, 2026. And if you haven’t noticed, that’s fine, barely anyone did. Hitting over 2000 screens, the film collected just $3M on its opening weekend, debuting in ninth place. Hell, even the re-release of “Top Gun” made more ($3.3M).
Things got worse. In its second weekend, the film plummeted by nearly 70% and didn’t even make $1M. So far, its domestic total stands at $5M, and if you can believe it, much of its international receipts have come from Russia ($3M), where apparently the film is a hit. Some things you just can’t explain.
The film reportedly cost $70M to produce. A lot of money will be lost on this film, which currently sits at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Shot in 2023 and then dropped by Lionsgate, word was that “In the Grey” wasn’t finished, with reshoots delayed for months due to scheduling conflicts — but they ultimately never occurred. One source said the real issue was simply timing: everyone’s calendars were out of sync, delays piled up, and the whole thing became a mess. Production company Black Bear finally decided to self-distribute the damn thing themselves.
As for Ritchie, he remains surprisingly busy. He just keeps chugging along. Last year, he released “Fountain of Youth” on Apple TV+, wrapped “Wife & Dog,” exited “Road House 2,” and jumped to a “Layer Cake” sequel with Jason Statham, which recently wrapped shooting. He’s given us four films and two TV shows in the last three years.
