Cate Blanchett Joins Brady Corbet’s ‘The Origin of the World’

May 17, 2026 Jordan Ruimy

During a masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival, Cate Blanchett revealed she will star in Brady Corbet’s next film, “The Origin of the World.”

This means Blanchett joins the already reported Selena Gomez, and her “Black Bag” co-star Michael Fassbender. The film is rumored to have a sprawling ensemble, and is supposed to start production this summer.

Corbet keeps saying the film, which spans 150 years — from the 19th century into the present day — though it is predominantly focused on the 1970s, will be X-rated, or NC-17, and run 4 hours in length. He also plans to shoot it on 65mm film.

Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner (“The Aviator,” “Blue Jasmine”), was last seen on the big screen in Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” and has upcoming projects, including the Zellner brothers’ “Alpha Gang” and Alice Birch’s “Sweetsick,” both set to premiere later this year.
