Riding the wave of the global hit “The Housemaid,” which has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, Lionsgate has announced that Kirsten Dunst will join Sydney Sweeney in “The Housemaid’s Secret,” the sequel set to begin filming this fall. The film, based on Freida McFadden’s second book in her ‘Housemaid’ series, will see Paul Feig returning as director.
Back in August 2025, Dunst mentioned that she wanted to star in ‘Minecraft 2’ because she’d “like to make a pile of cash.” She added, “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?”
She’s now signed up for two sequels, both shooting this year—one of them is indeed ‘Minecraft 2,’ and the other is ‘The Housemaid 2.’ Her Sofia Coppola-directed movie, which was supposed to shoot this year, has been scrapped.
Dunst is coming off a handful of strong performances; her last three acting credits were “The Power of the Dog,” “Civil War,” and “Roofman.” She also stars in Ruben Östlund’s “The Entertainment System is Down,” which could potentially hit Cannes next year.
Of course, Sweeney is returning, along with Italian actor Michele Morrone, who played the Italian landscaper. Amanda Seyfried will only have a cameo in this one.
“The Housemaid’s Secret” follows Millie Calloway (Seyfried), who takes a housekeeping job for a wealthy couple. She soon suspects that the wife (Dunst), hidden away under the pretense of illness, is being abused. Using her experience helping women in danger, Millie uncovers the household’s dark secrets—putting herself at risk in the process.
Insiders suggest that “The Housemaid’s Secret” will likely aim for the same holiday timing as the original. Scanning next year’s release calendar, a December 17, 2027 debut seems almost guaranteed.
