The Cannes Directors’ Fortnight (May 14-24) has unveiled its 2025 lineup. The 57th edition of the sidebar is set to open, for the second year in a row, with a posthumous work.
“Enzo,” directed by Robin Campillo (“BPM”), who shoots a script from late Palme d’Or-winning Laurent Cantet (”The Class”), will be the opening night film. Last year’s lineup opened with Sophie Fillières’ final film “This Life of Mine.”
The Fortnight will close with Eva Victor’s Sundance hit “Sorry Baby,” which A24 will be releasing this summer. The film stars writer/director Victor as a college literature professor coping with trauma.
Most intriguing of all, German filmmaker Christian Petzold will be making his Cannes debut with his latest Paula Beer-starring film, “Miroirs No. 3.” Although submitted for Cannes competition, the film will have to settle with being screened at DF.
The film, which tackles a pianist whose life is ruined when a car accident kills her boyfriend, was praised by DF artistic director Julien Rejl during Tuesday’s lineup announcement, saying, “It’s a kind of melodrama, very mysterious, but with the same great direction, precision and elegance that makes the charm of Christian Petzold’s cinema.”
A surprise inclusion. Australian director Sean Byrne, known for “The Devil's Candy,” is back with a new shark-centered thriller titled “Dangerous Animals.” The film stars Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone) as a surfer who falls into the hands of a serial killer, portrayed by Jai Courtney, with Josh Heuston also joining the cast. Distribution rights have already been secured by IFC Films and Shudder
With Directors’ Fortnight titles now revealed, there still remains notable filmmakers yet to be announced by Cannes’ Thierry Fremaux. Where will Jim Jarmusch, Lynne Ramsay, Bi Gan, Park Chan-wook, Nadav Lapid and Terrence Malick go? Some of these names might potentially be announced as late additions later this week.
