Kendrick Lamar, along with ‘South Park’ co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker shot a film last year. The mysterious project was said be a “slave comedy” set in California. The rest of the cast includes Chloe East and Celeste Octavia.
Paramount had set up a theatrical release for July 4, 2025, and what captures the spirit of Independence Day better than a slave comedy, am I right?
However, a poster for the film, which briefly appeared on Paramount’s official web site, before quickly being taken down, hints at some changes on the way. First off, Parker and Stone’s film is called "Whitney Springs", and not only has its release been delayed by a week to July 11th, but it might now be going straight to streaming on Paramount+
Again, this is unconfirmed, and I’ve reached out to Paramount for comment. I’ll update this post when they answer back.
“Whitney Springs” is said to “depict the past and present coming to a head when a young Black man who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his.”
The discourse for this one should be fun, and maybe Paramount wants to low-key bury this one instead of having to deal with the discourse. If that’s the case then shame on them.
Last year, Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount Paramount, described it as “one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read and it’s certain to create some fireworks.”
Besides their fantastic work on “South Park,” Stone and Parker are best known for the Broadway hit “The Book of Mormon,” as well as features such as “Cannibal: The Musical,” “Team America: World Police,” and “South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.”
