It’s been a slow post-Oscar week. Here’s a conversation starter.
Last year, we had a critics poll of the best films of the 2020’s, topped by Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” with Todd Field’s “TAR” not too far behind. Of course, that poll is already dated given that no 2024 film was counted, and one can imagine critics including stuff like “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” and “The Substance” into the mix.
I’m starting to see some conversations creep in about the “defining shot” of the current decade, with many citing the image of an upside down Statue of Liberty in “The Brutalist” — that definitely deserves to be a contender. I've included some of the more impactful ones below, and yes, “Barbie” had to be included.
Now, “most defining” doesn’t mean “best cinematography,” it’s more about the impact that the said shot has had, and in turn, the amount of times it’s been referred to in the movie community. With that said, chime in with your own picks in the comments section below.
